Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.  Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.  To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.
1Peter 5:8-11

Enthusiasm

“I was just so interested in what I was doing I could hardly wait to get up in the morning and get at it. One of my friends, a genecist, said I was a child because only children can’t wait to get up in the morning to get at what they want to do.”

Remember that the same Christ who tells us to say, “Give us this day our daily bread,” had first given us this petition, “Hallowed be thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven.”

Let not your prayers be all concerning your own sins, your own wants, your own imperfections, your own trials, but let them climb the starry ladder, and get up to Christ himself, and then, as you draw nigh to the blood-sprinkled mercy-seat, offer this prayer continually, “Lord, extend the kingdom of thy dear Son.”

Such a petition, fervently presented, will elevate the spirit of all your devotions.

Mind that you prove the sincerity of your prayer by labouring to promote the Lord’s glory.

Mental Abuse

People are full of anguish and hatred. It’s just too common to practice mental abuse in families, in offices, among friends and spouses, since killing would be too obvious a manifestation. Mental abuse on the other hand is subtle, and is no less torturous. Didn’t they say words are sharper than knife?

A Mighty Fortress

dscn66441

We visited Fortress Hohensalzburg this morning, and the word Fortress immediately reminded me of this hymn by Martin Luther. I couldn’t get it out of my head the whole day today.

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;
Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing:
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.

Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God’s own choosing:
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth, His Name, from age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.

And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us:
The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.

That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth;
The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him Who with us sideth:
Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also;
The body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still,
His kingdom is forever.

Peoples

We judge others by their acts, but ourselves by our intentions. – American Proverb

You are deemed as gross when you admit that you shower once a day to people who shower twice or more. You are a clean freak when you are with people who shower once in two days or less.

I need to remember that some things in life have to be absolute. Even when solving an engineering problem, I have constants and variables. In living my life, I need some things to be fixed constant, despite turbulences, despite what people around me think and do. I can’t have all variables, some things shouldn’t be changing, otherwise, I’ll find myself going in a circle and I would end up nowhere.

Why do we do what we do?

Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you.
Matt 6:33

And just to recall my blog post a few years back,

dear brothers and sisters,
i am inviting you to help me live by what i know is right. i want you to challenge, to inquire, to question me so that my actions line up with my convictions. my heart will betray me. i need you to help me fight the fight of faith and resist sin. i need you. i need to be reminded of reality. i need protection. i need help to be and do what i believe. i need to share and multiply my joy.

What I love about Greece

dscn4389

So Greece was good. We visited three different places, Santorini and Naxos Islands, and Athens. Santorini is all scenic and touristy, Naxos is cute and more local-ised, while Athens is a typical capital bustling city with ancient heritage. I’ve got myself 1000 pictures in my camera, a little souvenir, and a hole in my wallet.

Blogging in pictures is best, and here’s one on things I love about Greece.

Just as I am, without one plea

Just as I am, without one plea,
But that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou bidst me come to Thee,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, and waiting not
To rid my soul of one dark blot,
To Thee whose blood can cleanse each spot,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, though tossed about
With many a conflict, many a doubt,
Fightings and fears within, without,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind;
Sight, riches, healing of the mind,
Yea, all I need in Thee to find,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, Thou wilt receive,
Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
Because Thy promise I believe,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, Thy love unknown
Hath broken every barrier down;
Now, to be Thine, yea, Thine alone,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, of that free love
The breadth, length, depth, and height to prove,
Here for a season, then above,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!

Good or cute?

Easter is near. We’ve seen sights of bunnies and colorful eggs everywhere in Zurich since last month. Think of it as Valentine’s Day in Singapore, and you get the idea. We’ll have the long awaited and much anticipated 10 day Easter break starting Thursday, and with all these hypes about Easter, I think we are truly missing the point, blurring its meaning. I know I am.

I’ve just returned from Greece last night, and in two day’s time I will be backpacking in 5 cities in Eastern Europe. School is put on hold, and I wonder if I do the same to my Good Friday/Easter reflections too.

Bunnies and eggs!

dscn4987

Why bunnies? Because they are cute and fertile. Bunnies and eggs are supposed to symbolise new life, and it goes well with what the Christians celebrate during Easter: a new life, through the cross, in Jesus Christ.

The old cross, the rusty nails, the blood, the thorny crown sure don’t sell as well as cute bunnies and colorful eggs do. But there’s a reason why it’s called Good Friday, and not Cute.

Let us not forget that before there is new life, something must have taken place, for a good reason.
